The Town of Grimsby is proud to present the second annual Doors Open Grimsby Festival to be held on September 22, 2012. Buildings and places of architectural, historic, cultural, social and industrial significance will open their doors to the public for a town-wide celebration. Access to the sites is free from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm during Doors Open.
Doors Open Grimsby is designed for you to discover this unique, historical and scenic West Niagara town. Explore, ask questions, and reflect as you travel to Grimsby’s meaningful places. Learn the stories; interact; have fun and discover something new. Make it an adventure.

1. Grimsby Beach – Walking Tour
Featuring: A guided walking tour through gorgeous Grimsby Beach, organized by members of the beach community and Grimsby Heritage Advisory Committee. Featuring cottages at 3 Bettes Avenue and 41 Temple Lane. This tour meets at the Grimsby Beach Hall (10 Grand Avenue). You can either arrive at your own leisure, or hop on the Trolley at the Grimsby Museum located at 6 Murray Street. The Trolley Route is available on the Doors Open Map Guide.
Tour Times: Hourly from 10am to 4pm
Length of Tour: Approximately 1 hour
Accessibility: This tour is partially wheelchair accessible. Comfortable walking clothing/footwear recommended
Washrooms: A public washroom is located at the Grimsby Beach Hall (10 Grand Avenue)
2. Old Grimsby – Walking Tour
Featuring: A guided walking tour through the oldest communities of Grimsby, most of which was established prior to the War of 1812. The tour will focus on historic architecture and the historic context of the community.
Tour Times: 11am and 2pm
Length of Tour: Approximately 1 hour
Accessibility: This tour is wheelchair accessible, comfortable walking clothing/footwear recommended
Washrooms: Public washrooms are available at the Grimsby Museum at 6 Murray Street
3. Beamer Memorial Conservation Area – Walking Tour
Featuring: This hidden jewel is located on Quarry Road, off Ridge Road on top of the Escarpment. The guided tour will lead through the conservation area with gorgeous views and vantage points of Grimsby – Great for photographers! This trail has an upper trail portion for less experienced hikers and a stairway trail down the escarpment, great for more experienced hikers!
Tour Times: 11am and 2pm
· 11am tour ONLY – Tour assisted by a bird expert from the Niagara Peninsula Hawk Watch
Length of Tour: Approximately 1 hour
Accessibility: This tour is partially wheelchair accessible, although the trails are not paved. Please come prepared with walking and/or hiking gear and other supplies, such as bottled water.

4. 477 Elizabeth Street Pump House/Engagement at the Forty Battlefield/1812 International Peace Park – Interpretive Re-enactment
Featuring: An interpretive re-enactment of the historic Engagement at the Forty during the War of 1812 including soldiers with muskets and firing demonstration, outdoor cooking demonstrations in 1812 period tents with dancing and a fiddler!
Re-enactment Times: Re-enactors will be stationed at the 477 Elizabeth Street Pump House from 10am – 4pm with drills and demonstrations throughout the day.

5. Our Gate to Your Plate Farm
Featuring: Timed tours of the farm with rare breeds of animals including Galloway beef, a naming the calf contest (with the letter ‘Z’), displays of information on their rare breeds of animals, and samples of their hormone-free farm produce on the BBQ! This site will also make their products available for sale to bring home to the family.

6. Forks Road Pottery/Great Western Railway Station
Featuring: An arrangement of hand-crafted artisan pottery by Marsha Cox. Act fast – because Forks Road Pottery is leaving Grimsby soon! This historic building will also feature display panels of information on the buildings use as the Great Western Railway Station.

7. Chamber of Commerce Headquarters/Old Grimsby Police and Fire Building
Featuring: A tour of the old Grimsby Police and Fire Building – with a chance to see the old jail cells still located in the building! Also featuring display panels with historic information on the building.

8. Grimsby Museum
Featuring: FREE admission to two different exhibits at the museum including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and Grimsby’s food industry showcasing its associations with tender fruit and prominent people in history such as the Woolverton family and E.D. Smith.
· This site is also a Trolley stop – riding down Main street to Grimsby Beach Hall
· This site is also the headquarters of the Old Grimsby Walking Tour

9. Grimsby Public Art Gallery and Library
Featuring: At the Art Gallery – Children’s art activities, with FREE admission to the Bi-annual Juried exhibition (a province-wide art competition), and a tour of the Art Gallery vault. The Art Gallery is also hosting Nights of Art (12pm – 9pm) where artists and musicians will be stationed at various locations around town! At the Public Library – An 1812 themed book collection and authors’ discussion by the fireplace! Also featuring an in-library scavenger hunt, seed-planting activities for children and showcasing the new Seed Library – the first and only heirloom vegetable Seed Library in Canada .

10. Grimsby Fire Department
Featuring: The return of Old Betsie, the vintage Grimsby Fire Truck – a 1935 pump engine! Also featuring artifacts and display panels of the old Grimsby Fire Station. Come and tour the new fire station and meet Grimsby’s finest.

11. Silmaril Farms
Featuring: Friendly livestock (such as baby chicks) and fun children’s activities. Silmaril will also make products available for you to take home – like their delicious apple cider!
· This site will have a BBQ available from 11am – 2pm with baked apple goods, lamb, chicken and apple cider.

12. Forty Creek Distillery – (Formerly Kittling Ridge Estate Wines and Spirits)
Featuring: A tour of one of Canada’s largest distilleries! Come visit Forty Creek and sample their award winning wines, whiskeys and spirits, also available for you to purchase on-site.

13. Cibo Osteria Italian Restaurant
Featuring: A guided tour of the Queen Anne style building showcasing its history as a Doctor’s office with display panels and site information. This site will also offer samples of delicious Italian Soda, with products to buy such as their handmade Italian cookies. This site will host a lunchtime BBQ on the patio with live music – great for grabbing food to go – such as breaded chicken cutlets for kids, Italian sausage on a bun and grilled chicken on a bun (with a side) – only $10 for adults and $5 for kids!

14. Mountain Ridge Community Centre/Formerly St. Mary’s Church and Hall
Featuring: Doors Open access to the Mountain Ridge Community Centre – Formerly St Mary’s Church and Hall. Come and see the beautiful Hall (perfect for weddings, Stag & Does, family reunions and parties) – as well as the beautiful St. Mary’s Church. Learn about the Church’s Neo-Byzantine Style and see the original stained glass windows, pews, and tapestries.

15. Concord Mountain Farm
Featuring: Doors Open access to the original site of Concord Mountain Farm’s Concord Grape vineyard. Visit the farm and purchase farm fresh produce such as apples, and their famous Grape Juice!

16. Gaeta Farms and Greenhouses
Featuring: Doors Open access to Gaeta Greenhouses – Gaeta specialises in tropical plants and flowers in summer months. In the fall months they offer seasonal flowers such as fall mums. Gaeta also carries a wide selection of garden accessories and gift items. This site has penned goats and a lunch corn roast. * Keep your site flyer and receive 10% off your next purchase at Gaeta!

17. Ride the Trolley/Interpretation of the Hamilton Grimsby & Beamsville Electric Railway
Featuring: A completely FREE to ride historic interpretation of the former H.G. & B. Railway. Ride the Trolley express from the Grimsby Museum (6 Murray Street) to the Grimsby Beach Hall (10 Grand Avenue). You can either ride the round trip back to the Museum/Beach Hall, or you can stop to take the Grimsby Beach Walking Tour (happening every hour – see details above).
Tour Times: ALL DAY
Length of Tour: It takes approximately 45 mins to take a round trip on the trolley – from the Beach Hall (10 Grand Avenue) to the Museum (6 Murray Street) and back again. For those that are taking the Grimsby Beach Walking Tour (meets at the Beach Hall) – please allow for approximately 1 hour for the duration of the Walking Tour.
Accessibility: The Trolley is not wheelchair accessible and cannot accommodate strollers.

Doors Open Grimsby 2012 welcomes Cibo Osteria Italian Restaurant to the September 22nd Event. Cibo (pronounced Chee-Bow’s) is an Italian restaurant specialzing in gnocci, pizza, and even homemade ravioli! The beautiful building was home to Dr. Buck, and then Dr. MacMillan. The tube by the door used to talk to doctors is still on-site. Come to Cibo’s on September 22nd for a tour of the building, and a patio BBQ hosted by the owner (Tony Macri) with live music! This is a great site to pick up lunch for the whole family!
Grimsby Doors Open 2012 welcomes Concord Mountain Farm to the event on September 22nd. The Farm produces 12 varieties of apples, as well as plums, pears, and concord grapes. The grapes are processed off-site to make concord grape juice, with no sugars, addatives, or preservatives! You can buy their seasonal products at the Binbrook, Dunnville or Grimsby Farmers Markets. Join them on September 22nd for a tour of their farm!

Doors Open 2012 is featuring Gaeta Greenhouses at 174 Mud West, Grimsby.
They specialize in exquisite tropical flowers, gifts, hanging baskets, and annuals. During the Doors Open festival on September 22nd, they will feature their fall plants and flowers, such as their beautiful fall Mums.
Old Grimsby Walking Tour
Trails Open Site
Join this guided tour through the oldest built area of Grimsby. Some of the homes featured on the tour were constructed before the War of 1812. Some highlights include St. Andrew’s Church, the Nelles Fitch House, and Nelles Manor.

The Grimsby Public Library
The Grimsby Public Library shares a new state-of-the-art facility with the Public Art Gallery located on Carnegie Lane and built in 2004. The Library offers a range of services including lending books and DVD’s, children’s story time, public internet terminals, free wireless internet, summer reading clubs, and the Grimsby Author Series. This year - the Library is featuring a savanger hunt, author discussions, an 1812 themed book display, and their Seed Library - the only one of it’s kind in Canada!

Chamber of Commerce Headquarters/ Old Fire and Police Building
Built in the late-nineteenth century, the two storey brick building was home to Grimsby’s fire and police services until the mid-twentieth century. The building is now home to the Grimsby & district Chamber of Commerce who works to “promote and maintain the economic, civil and social well being of our community.”
Come to this site during Doors Open Grimsby to get your picture taken in an old jail cell!

Grimsby Fire Department
Once a wooden drill shed, the present fire hall has evolved to reflect the needs of the present day community. From horse-carts and hand-pumps to current fire fighting technology, the Grimsby Fire Services demonstrates the use of changing technology as time progresses.

Doors Open Grimsby is pleased to present a trolley as part of the 2012 event that will interpret the rail lines of the historic Hamilton, Grimsby, & Beamsville Electric Railway Company. The Trolley IS FREE to ride!!! Leaving from the Grimsby Museum at 6 Murray Street and making a round-trip to the Grimsby Beach Hall at 10 Grand Avenue.

Grimsby Public Art Gallery
The Grimsby Public Art Gallery is located within the new Library and Art Gallery complex located on Carnegie Lane (formerly Victoria Avenue). The Gallery was established in 1975, as a non-profit organization which operates for the benefit and enrichment of the public. Our immediate audience is the Town of Grimsby and surrounding centres in the Region of Niagara. The building is also home to the state-of-the-art Grimsby Library. Join the Library for the Nights of Art event - with artists and musicians stationed at key points around town! The Gallery is also hosting fun arts activities for kids and FREE admission to see the Art Gallery Vault and Jurried Exhibition.

Grimsby Museum
The Grimsby Museum was established in 1984 to serve the community as an integral part of the cultural life of Grimsby. This purpose built facility is owned and operated by the Town and includes exhibition galleries which interpret Grimsby’s history. The building features a Regency style entrance that is the original doorway from the Isaac Marlat Inn (1855). This year the Museum will feature two exbits with FREE ADMISSION! Come see the Diamond Jubillee and the Grimsby Food Industry Exhibits!

Forks Road Pottery/ Former Great Western Railway Station
The Grimsby Great Western Railway Station, built in 1855 is one of the oldest railway stations in Ontario, and the oldest located in the vicinity of its original location. When a new station was built in 1900, the original building was used as a produce depot that shipped fruit throughout the Niagara region. Since 1997, the building has been home to the Forks Road Pottery.
Come to Forks Road Pottery to explore Grimsby’s first train station, as well as pottery displays and to watch a pottery demo.

Our Gate To Your Plate Farm
Our Gate To Your Plate brings the quality and taste of traditional values to the plate of local consumers and restaurants. The farm offers rare breed meats carefully selected for their taste and ability to live in our climate with no need to supplement feed or add growth hormones. See the animals, visit the family-run shop to take home farm fresh products and watch a sheep shearing demonstration.
There will be many exciting activities for visitors to Our Gate to Your Plate Farm including a tour of the farm animals and a name the calf competition. Make sure to come out to 234 Elm Tree Road East for these great family activities. Be sure to bring proper footwear for farm terrain.

Grimsby Beach
Trails Open Site
Grimsby Park, the “Chautauqua of Canada” became the site of a summer-long Methodist revival event in 1859, and as times changed, evolved into a colourful cottage resort and amusement park. Many of the distinctive Victorian cottages have been retained through the site’s evolution.
Come out to the Grimsby Beach Hall during Doors Open to take part in a walking tour of the area and learn about this unique neighbourhood.

Engagement at the Forty Battlefield / 1812 International Peace Park
The International Peace Garden and National Historic Plaque commemorates the site of the Engagement at the Forty.

Elizabeth Street Pump House
The Elizabeth Street Waterworks is an excellent example of a 20th century waterworks facility. The red brick building was built with the influence of the Romanesque Style. Replaced by a new waterworks in 1998, the building locally known as the Pumphouse, was partially restored for public use. The Lakeside Pump House Artists meets each week at the pump house and will be showing an exhibition of their works at Doors Open Grimsby.

Beamer Memorial Conservation Area
Trails Open site
A walking tour will take visitors through the history, vegetation, wildlife and geology of the Beamer Falls Conservation Area. As the highest point on the Niagara Escarpment, Beamer falls provides breathtaking panoramic views of the escarpment and is the ideal place to see the hawk migration, as the majestic birds use the ridge to gain altitude as they travel north.
